Why is it that when I buy a tube of toothpaste, I pay the printed price, but when I take an auto, I have to bargain?

I dislike bargaining so I usually pay the ask.

Knot theory

January 13, 2011

The Mayans were into knots.  Wasn’t it them who used to keep accounts on quipus? (No it was the Inca of andean pre-columbian civilisation) (Imagine that!  Keeping accounts on clutches of rope.  You can have different kinds of knots for different accounts.  You can have different braids for different debtors.  I use my dressing gown sash.  But I soon forget what the event was that it signified.)

I read once somewhere that when the Mayan weavers used to finish weaving their wares, they would leave the last knot undone.  Now what do you think was their real reason for doing that?
